Widowed and penniless after the death of her beloved husband Tom, Julia must leave behind her friends and independence in Genoa to travel home to England with Tom’s brother, the enigmatic Duke of Maldon. As they journey through a Europe only just recovering from Napoleon’s wars, Julia becomes convinced the duke’s cold reserve hides a warmer nature—and she is determined to make him unbend, despite the danger to her reputation.

But Henry Verley has reasons for guarding his emotions, and every mile they travel together threatens to awaken feelings neither of them should entertain. Desperate to escape the pain of their forbidden love they both find themselves seeking marriage during the London season, unaware that a woman from Tom’s past is plotting revenge and a looming scandal could destroy them all.
