Celine could never pretend to be Elspeth and go to London to meet Elspeth’s trustees, not even for her best friend! But she does.

 

Celine and Elspeth, have lived most of their lives at Miss Finch’s Seminary near Kings Lynn, neglected and forgotten, so they decide to take their lives into their own hands. Elspeth is determined a summons from her trustees will not prevent her rendezvous with her Dutch ship’s captain and persuades Celine to assume her identity. Greatly daring, shy and sensible Celine sets out on a masquerade, fraught with risk when she is invited by Elspeth’s uncle, the elegant Earl of Redcliff, to spend Christmas at Redcliff Castle. 

 

His inheritance of the title frustrated Giles’ career pursuing Napoleon’s spies, so he is intrigued to sense a mystery around his supposed niece and a possible link to a spy network in the seaports of Norfolk and The Wash.
